Corrugated boxes are the backbone of product shipping in the United States — and getting the specification right matters far more than most buyers realize before they experience a damaged shipment. What Is a Corrugated Box?

A corrugated box is constructed from three layers: two flat linerboard sheets bonded to a fluted (wave-pattern) inner medium — sometimes called the “medium” or “fluting.” That wave layer is what separates a corrugated shipping box from ordinary cardboard. The air columns created by the fluted medium absorb impact, resist vertical compression, and give corrugated boxes a strength-to-weight ratio that plain cardboard simply cannot match.

Corrugated and cardboard are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same material. Cardboard (chipboard) is a single solid layer — used for cereal boxes, shoe boxes, and lightweight retail packaging. A corrugated box has the layered, fluted structure described above, making it the correct choice for any application that involves actual shipping. When people search “cardboard box corrugated,” they are almost always looking for genuine corrugated board.

Corrugated Box Flute Types — Which One Is Right for Your Product?

Not all corrugated boxes ship the same. Flute type determines cushioning, stacking strength, and print surface quality. Here is the full breakdown:

Flute

Thickness

Best For

Print Quality

A-Flute

4.8 mm

Heavy loads, fragile items, export freight

Moderate

B-Flute

3.0 mm

Display boxes, canned goods, retail shelf

Very Good

C-Flute

4.0 mm

General e-commerce and corrugated shipping boxes

Good

E-Flute

1.6 mm

Custom corrugated mailer boxes, subscription boxes, cosmetics

Excellent

F-Flute

0.8 mm

Luxury retail, high-end corrugated box packaging

Superior

For most e-commerce corrugated boxes shipping through standard parcel carriers, C-flute delivers the best balance of protection and cost. For custom corrugated mailer boxes used in subscription programs, E-flute is the industry standard. For heavy freight and industrial applications, A-flute double-wall or triple-wall is the right specification.

Wall Configurations & ECT Ratings

Single-Wall (3-ply) — Standard Corrugated Box Packaging

32 ECT single-wall is the US standard for most corrugated box packaging. Handles products up to approximately 20–30 lbs under normal shipping conditions. The correct choice for most e-commerce parcels and retail distribution.

Double-Wall (5-ply) — Heavy Duty Corrugated Boxes

Double-wall construction at 48 ECT is the specification for heavy duty corrugated boxes — suitable for products from 30–65 lbs, palletized freight, and any application where standard single-wall shows inadequate stacking performance. Heavy duty corrugated cardboard boxes at this specification are standard for electronics, hardware, and B2B distribution.

Triple-Wall (7-ply) — Industrial Grade

82+ ECT triple-wall corrugated supports loads exceeding 150 lbs. Built for machinery parts, bulk agricultural goods, heavy industrial freight, and export shipments. Box Compression Test (BCT) values can exceed 2,000 lbs on larger formats.

ECT vs Burst Strength:  ECT (Edge Crush Test) measures stacking compression performance — the industry standard since the 1990s. Burst strength (Mullen Test) measures sidewall puncture resistance, an older spec still referenced for some carrier tariffs. We work with both metrics based on your requirements.

Custom Printed Corrugated Boxes — Printing & Finish Options

Every corrugated box we manufacture supports full customization. Custom printed corrugated boxes are available in the following configurations:

  • CMYK full-color digital printing — best for corrugated box printing runs of 100–2,000 pcs; photo-quality graphics

  • Pantone spot color matching — exact brand color consistency across all production runs
  • Interior printing — transform the inside of the lid into premium brand real estate
  • Matte lamination, gloss coating, spot UV, soft-touch, aqueous finishes
  • Foil stamping, embossing, debossing, window patch, QR codes

Corrugated Boxes for Every Industry

E-Commerce and Shopify Brands

Corrugated boxes shipping through Shopify stores and DTC operations need to balance protective performance with brand presentation. We produce custom printed corrugated boxes with exterior and interior CMYK printing — the unboxing moment becomes a brand event, not an afterthought. Many DTC brands find that a printed corrugated shipping box generates more organic social content than paid campaigns.

Amazon FBA Sellers

Amazon’s FBA program requires packaging that meets ISTA 2A certification for drop and compression performance. Our corrugated boxes are manufactured to these standards and satisfy Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging requirements. We can also review your current box spec before production and flag any compliance issues that could cause rejection at FBA receiving.

Subscription Box Programs

Custom corrugated mailer boxes for subscription programs require a specific balance: rigid enough to protect diverse monthly contents, visually impressive for the unboxing experience, and cost-effective at high monthly volumes. Our E-flute mailer boxes with full interior printing are purpose-built for subscription fulfillment operations.

Food and Beverage Companies

FDA-compliant corrugated packaging boxes with moisture-barrier and grease-resistant coating options. We understand food labeling requirements and build regulatory elements — nutrition facts, allergens, net weight, UPC — into the design from the start, not as an afterthought.

Industrial and B2B Distribution

Heavy duty corrugated cardboard boxes for freight, palletized loads, and industrial components. Double and triple-wall construction with optional inner partitions, corner post inserts, and ISTA burst and compression testing documentation.

What is a corrugated box and how is it different from cardboard?

A corrugated box has a three-layer structure: two flat linerboards bonded to a fluted inner medium. The fluted layer creates air columns that absorb impact and resist compression — making corrugated significantly stronger than single-layer cardboard. Cardboard (chipboard) is solid and used for lightweight retail packaging. For any actual shipping application, corrugated is the correct material.

What corrugated box specification do I need for my product?

It depends on product weight, shipping method, and stacking requirements. Single-wall 32 ECT handles most e-commerce parcels up to ~20 lbs. Double-wall 48 ECT covers heavy duty applications to ~65 lbs. Triple-wall goes beyond that. Share your product weight, dimensions, and shipping conditions and our engineers will specify the right construction at no charge.

Can I get custom printed corrugated boxes from 100 pieces?

Yes, full CMYK color printing including logos, brand graphics, and product photography starts at MOQ 100 pieces. Digital printing at this volume delivers excellent quality for both simple logos and full-color designs. Flexographic printing becomes more cost-efficient at 2,500+ units.

What are white corrugated boxes used for?

White corrugated boxes use a white-coated liner on the exterior surface instead of standard brown kraft. The coating provides a cleaner, brighter print surface colors appear more vivid and accurate compared to printing on brown kraft. White corrugated is popular for retail packaging, premium e-commerce brands, and any application where print quality is a priority.

Do you supply bulk corrugated boxes with volume pricing?

Yes, we supply bulk corrugated boxes with tiered pricing at 500, 1,000, 2,500, and 5,000+ units. The per-unit cost decreases progressively at each tier. Contact our team for a volume pricing breakdown for your specific box style and quantity.

Are custom corrugated mailer boxes the same as regular corrugated boxes?

Custom corrugated mailer boxes are a specific format within the corrugated box category. They feature a self-locking lid-and-base construction that seals without tape. Regular corrugated shipping boxes (RSC format) require tape to close. Mailer boxes use finer flute (E or B) for sharper exterior print, while RSC boxes use C-flute as standard. Mailers are preferred for subscription and DTC brands; RSC is the standard for general shipping and B2B distribution.

What is corrugated box printing and what are the options?

Corrugated box printing refers to applying graphics, logos, and text directly to the corrugated surface. Options include CMYK digital printing (best for short runs with complex graphics), flexographic printing (1–6 colors, most cost-effective for large volumes), and Pantone spot color matching for brand-critical color accuracy. Interior printing printing inside the box lid is also available and popular for subscription and DTC brands.
